Where It Began
In 1976, on Yom Kippur, the Lubavitcher Rebbe called for the creation of an organization to support new mothers during the postpartum period. Shifra & Puah, named after the two midwives in Egypt who helped Jewish mothers with both physical and emotional care, was established to carry out this mission. Their actions ensured the continuity of Jewish life under difficult circumstances, and it was in their merit that the Jewish nation was redeemed. Following the Rebbeβs vision, organizations bearing their name have spread worldwide, fostering a sense of community and support for mothers.
